Since 2016, Thea Bowman Leadership Academy (“TBLA”) has operated under a charter issued by Education One at Trine University. In November of 2023, TBLA filed an Application to Change Authorizers, identifying Calumet College of St. Joseph as an ideal partner. Today, the Board of CCSJ Charter Authority, LLC voted to approve the application submitted by TBLA. This decision paves the way toward a partnership between the two educational institutions, subject to the final approval of the Indiana Charter School Board. TBLA is also excited to announce an $8 million expansion of the school located on the west side of Gary, Indiana. THEA BOWMAN LEADERSHIP ACADEMY EARNS CCSJ CHARTER AUTHORITY AUTHORIZATION AND ANNOUNCES GROUNDBREAKING ON $8 MILLION SCHOOL EXPANSION
GARY, IN (JANUARY 29, 2024) – Since 2016, Thea Bowman Leadership Academy (“TBLA”) has operated under a charter issued by Education One at Trine University. In November of 2023, TBLA filed an Application to Change Authorizers, identifying Calumet College of St. Joseph as an ideal partner. Today, the Board of CCSJ Charter Authority, LLC voted to approve the application submitted by TBLA. This decision paves the way toward a partnership between the two educational institutions, subject to the final approval of the Indiana Charter School Board.
“The Calumet College team found that TBLA’s application was compelling, and we accept their favorable recommendation to proceed to the next step of the authorization process,” said Dr. Ginger Rodriguez, President of CCSJ Charter Authority.
“There’s lots of work to be done and that work, I take it as a commitment,” said Thea Bowman’s School Board President Eve Gomez. “We’re going to be all hands on deck, moving forward towards something great for our scholars,” said Gomez.
TBLA is also excited to announce an $8 million expansion of the school located on the west side of Gary, Indiana. The expansion will consist of several phases, the first of which will include a new facilities and storage building, a kindergarten through 5th grade classroom addition and an expansion of the school’s cafeteria to double it in size. Future phases of the school’s expansion will include a new multipurpose room for athletics and arts, an elementary, middle and high school classroom addition, a new health clinic and new athletic fields, complete with a running track and associated amenities for all track and field events.
